The Fleming Academy of Performing Arts was established in 1985 by its director, Trudy Fleming. It is located in Springfield, Illinois and offers artists their choice of violin, viola, piano and chamber orchestra, with programs for adults and children, with pupils as young as age three. The Academy accommodates around 100 students.
The Academy follows the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, allowing a child to begin very young, and progress step by step to accomplished note reading. The technique emphasizes parental involvement, self-discipline and positive reinforcement.
Opportunity
To broaden their experience, the Fleming Academy offers many opportunities for students to perform, with such accomplished artists as violinist Jaime Jorge, harpist Greg Buchanan and pianist Jane Hartman, and in conjunction with various organizations such as the St. Andrews Society and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
Locally, the Fleming Academy has delighted audiences at the Governor’s Mansion, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and Busch Stadium. They’ve entertained regular folks and celebrities from national politicians and dignitaries to Miss America.
Our popular international tours have allowed students to play for the armed forces with the USO; at the historic Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, England; in Ashikaga, Japan representing Springfield in its Sister City program; in Tokyo, Japan, at Budokan, for Dr. Suzuki and the royal family; in Rome; in Nice; in Hawaii, on the “surrender deck” of the USS Missouri Memorial. Our gifted students have performed on television and in the White House, and in many other exciting places.
At the Fleming Academy, pupils can sense the global impact of their hard work and practice. One impromptu concert for an appreciative homeless man living on the old streets of London reminded students that their talent can truly be given as a gift.
The Academy’s popular recording, “Eclectic Strings,” was taped at the Chicago Recording Company and is available on iTunes and on compact disc.
